So apparently it’s Earth Day. I feel compelled to call out my own industry on this day. Over the last year I have made an effort to cut back on Wet Floral Foam (full disclosure, we usually only use it on installations or “vase-less” arrangements) as it’s horrible for the environment, out of season product, shipping (my god the shipping), and the over all consumption of the same product that every one else is using (silver dollar eucalyptus much?). This may be seen as a snooty post but my true heart is not that of seeing myself better but of calling us all to be better. The floral industry, for the most part, wreaks havoc on our earth. You’d think that because it’s grown from the earth that it’s good for it. Not the case. Now there are responsible farms out there, don’t get me wrong. But they, like organic produce, can cost more. Therein lies the rub. Money. (surprised!? probably not). So we don’t always go the responsibly farmed route, and I get it. But I’ve started sourcing a TON more locally, and I know a lot of you do too, but what about the product you are getting shipped in, or how you are arranging, or disposing of, or all of us using the exact same product? 5 years ago garden roses were being used, sure (insert the Juliet), but not like today. Same goes for eucalyptuses and next up (drumroll please) Smilax. Our industry is So. hard. on. the. Earth. So hard on it. So I thought I’d try to understand my industry a bit better by starting at the source. Trying to grow my own shizz and see how it goes (or crashes and burns because Oklahoma weather). But moreover, I just hope to know the floral part of my industry better and that means knowing more than just the finished floral product but what goes into getting it from seed (ok so even actually sourcing the seed, there is a whole other post on seeds, did you know… nm.) Just knowing and respecting the process and maybe… in a few years, having my own cutting garden and instead of having it shipped in from the nearest MAYESH (or not nearest, MAYESH LAX I’m looking at you) I can walk out to my garden, snip what I need and make something beautiful. One day. Also, if you’re in OK follow and use @bearcreekfarmsinc
Things are changing 💗
real talk:
two movies that really resonate with me at the moment are coming out on the same day… Tully, a movie staring Charlize Theron, “A bitingly funny, deeply empathetic ode to motherhood.” I’m sure I’ll be snot crying. Then - I Feel Pretty starting Amy Schumer about a woman who has low self esteem and hits her head and sees herself as a supermodel. Snot cry for sure from laughing. I think I’m going to go see Tully and cry out the past 5 months and do a compete 180 and go see I Feel Pretty and laugh cry my way back to a new version of myself. Feels bold and empowering and a bit crazy but hey either way April 20th’s double header self date night will be one for the books!
